Strange Times and Dangerous Times
DeLillo is a regular supporter of PEN’s free expression advocacy and so I see him around every so often at rallies and events. I took this photograph at the New Year’s Eve rally on the steps of the NYPL for imprisoned Chinese writer Liu Xiaobo. Shortly after DeLillo won the Saul Bellow award for lifetime achievement, I asked him if he would agree to a short interview about his work, the craft of writing, and freedom of expression. He agreed, and in true DeLillo fashion suggested we conduct the interview via fax.
